Essence

A first solo exhibition of new work by Julianne Barclay

24 September – 7 November 2021

Julianne is an abstract painter working in Kinloch Rannoch, Highland Perthshire. This exhibition will be Julianne’s first solo show with The Watermill, though the gallery has followed her career closely, having purchased one of her large scale pieces in 2017 for their permanent collection following a successful group show within the gallery. This show is the fruition of nearly three years working exclusively towards the crescendo that sees nearly 26 pieces hanging together for ‘Essence’, a rich body of work steeped in gestural abstraction.

Before Making the Silage | oil on board, approx. 110cm x 94cm 🔴

By opening the subconscious, the painting process begins. Often recent experiences come to the surface. When starting I have no preconceived ideas about what image or composition, as intuition leads… by adding, taking away, scratching and scrapping, a natural conclusion is reached. The image feels and expresses a truth.

That Spring Feeling | oil on board, approx. 188cm x 79cm, £3600

There is something monumental about Julianne’s work; the scale, the fervor, the integrity and the determination to capture essence. Imagining her painting within the large remote highland landscape that she lives and works; suddenly you comprehend the exhilarating conversation that is ensuing between artist and work, a sense of scale that in her vision is a two-way dialogue.
